The LEGO Group is offering a smaller buildable shoe on the shelves of 40486 Adidas Originals Superstar – but you’ll still have to spend a lot to get this gift with purchase.
Available with qualifying purchases of £ 95 / $ 85 / € 95 on LEGO.com and in LEGO stores July 1–25 (or while supplies last), this miniature version of the larger 10282 Adidas Originals Superstar – also launched July 1 – offers a way to show off your love for the fashion brand without spending £ 79.99 / $ 79.99 / € 89.99 on a single set.
However, you will technically have to spend more than that to acquire it, which makes the 40486 Adidas Originals Superstar a less tempting proposition if you hadn’t already planned to order a product worth £ 95 / $ 85/95. € in July.
As an add-on to Adidas Originals Superstar 10282, this threshold also looks special – purchasing the 18+ set alone will not qualify for the accompanying giveaway, so you’ll need to add something more to your cart. But it’ll get you one of the coolest buy-in gifts of the past few months, and a figure that really should have been included in the larger set from the start.
This figure takes the model of the brick-suit characters from the Collectible Minifigures series and adds a 2 × 3 sticker tile, along with a boombox, microphone, and cap (it’s clear this guy is supposed to be a hype man Adidas ). As we noted in our 10282 Adidas Originals Superstar review, this is a figure that would have served the full-size set well, so seeing it branch off to this GWP is slightly disappointing.
The shoe itself reverses the colors of its big brother – at least beyond that distinctive shell toe, which remains white on both models – leading with black, divided by three white stripes. You just have to make it stand out on its own, but you will also find pleasure in the solutions used to make a shoe on this scale much smaller.
For example, the T-bars inserted into the 2 × 6 plate with holes to create the impression of laces are much more suited to the LEGO system than the actual lace that comes in 10282 Adidas Originals Superstar, while the printed tiles used for the iconic triple stripe will undoubtedly come in handy elsewhere (though it suffers from the usual faded white-on-black print).
If you buy 10282 Adidas Originals Superstar ASAP, you’d do well to add just another small set – or a few key chains, or bags of 71030 Looney Tunes Collectible Minifigures, et al – to your cart to grab 40486 Adidas Superstar originals. With a box that also mimics the style of its older brother’s unique packaging in a more traditional LEGO format, it makes the perfect accessory for the latest 18+ (or LEGO for adults) set.
You will be able to pick it up from July 1 on LEGO.com and in LEGO stores with any order of at least £ 95 / $ 85 / € 95, until July 25 (or while supplies last, which – taking into account recent trends – probably will not be during the entire promotional period).
